Reduce • Reuse • Recycle

The Three R’s of the environment.

Since 1 August 2009, residents have been encouraged to participate in the Letamo recycling initiative.

Why it matters

Recycling saves money and protects wildlife. About 65% of an average rubbish bag can potentially be recycled or composted, meaning the refuse-removal cost could be reduced substantially.

Loose refuse is dangerous on a game farm: jackal, fallow deer, mongoose and eland can tear bags, eat plastic and die slowly. Letamo previously lost eight eland because they ate plastic.

01

Monday collection

Refuse removal happens on Mondays only. If Monday is a public holiday, collection moves to the next business day.

02

07:00 start

Refuse collection starts at 07:00. Please place sealed bags out on time because the route is done once and workers cannot return later.

03

End of driveway

Bags and bins must be placed where your driveway meets the road. Farm workers may not walk or drive down private driveways to collect refuse.

04

Sealed bags only

Open bags are not collected because refuse can fall from the trailer, attract flies, become unhygienic or injure workers with tins and broken glass.

05

Collection day only

Only put out refuse bags on collection days unless you have a built-in refuse receptacle with a secure lid.

Practical tips

  • Use separate storage bins for plastics, glass, cans and paper.
  • Rinse smelly containers before adding them to recycling.
  • Squash plastic containers and replace the lids to save space.
  • Check for recycling symbols such as PET, PP or HDPE.

Facts worth remembering

  • One recycled aluminium can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours.
  • An aluminium can can remain in the environment for 500 years.
  • Recycling paper uses about 70% less energy than making it from raw material.
  • Up to 60% of rubbish in a dustbin could be recycled, and up to 50% could be composted.
  • Plastic waste in oceans kills large numbers of marine creatures every year.

Beyond bags

Recycle e-waste, rechargeable batteries and CFLs through appropriate collection points. Support recycled goods, compost garden and kitchen waste, reuse water where practical and dispose of used oil responsibly through recognised channels such as the ROSE Foundation.
